BOU DELLIF

From the popular imagination, Bou Dellif refers to the masked man dressed in palm fibrillium, a carnival and grotesque figure specific to the folklore of Gabes and south-eastern Tunisia. A practice that has gradually fallen into disuse, its origin dates back to an ancient Neolithic rite linked to the cult of the ram and the palm tree, symbols of rain and fertility, omens of thunder and the strength of the herd. On the eve of the full moon in June, the composer Frédéric D. Oberland (from the group Oiseaux-Tempête) in collaboration with the Tunisian artist Malek Gnaoui and local traditional musicians, Wled Fayala, will propose a contemporary and cosmic reinvention of this festival that is as disturbing as it is symbolic.

Frédéric D. Oberland b. 1978 / Lives and works in Paris, France. Multi-instrumentalist musician and photographer, Frédéric D. Oberland’s work is at a crossroads of image and sound, favoring a kinesthetic approach. He articulates different modes of narration combining the raw features of the documentary form with the transfigured reality of myth and poetry, this allows him to question notions such as the sacred, the monstrous and fraternity, then return to the political news. Attentive to the pulsation of bodies, his music is willing to be itinerant, modulating and dreamy ripple, watching for points of incandescence and bursts of electricity that uncover revelations of our presence in the world, here and now, of its mysticism and its violence. Frédéric D. Oberland is the co-founder of the groups Oiseaux-Tempête, FOUDRE !, Le Réveil des Tropiques and of the NAHAL Recordings label.
